Custom wheels are wheels are vastly different from those supplied by the manufacturer when the car is first built. You can either order custom wheels when you place your new car order (the expensive way) or you can purchase them after you take delivery (the smart way).

One of the reasons people choose custom wheels is for their performance benefits. This is important for people who want optimum performance from their vehicle.

Another reason that car enthusiasts prefer custom rims is that they provide grater wheel strength. This is particularly important if the vehicle is going to be hard driven, such as in racing or off-road.

For the average person though the appeal of custom wheels lies in their aesthetic value. People who take a great deal of pride in the appearance of their car or truck will sometimes undertake a long and detailed search for the perfect set of custom wheels. They have an image in mind and won’t rest until they achieve it.

They will generally have several different styles and price ranges to choose from. If you’re lucky, you’ll find a retailer who employ people with a good understanding of wheels. They’ll suggest several alternatives and leave the final decision in your hands.

Just beware the high pressure sales type. Its an important (and costly) decision so don’t be pressured into buying a wheel just becdause “Its in stock.” Better to buy the perfect set that may take a few days or weeks to arrive.

This is where the internet comes in real handy. You can browse many merchants quickly and in comfort. No salesperson leaning over your shoulder and there’s lots of choice in style, material and prices. But here too, be careful. There’s also some pretty bad (unprofessional) merchants online. The good ones will have a large selection. Will tell you what’s in stock. And will ship your order immediately.

One warning sign is a cheesy looking site with no information. Another is what’s known as a link farm. They offer you nothing but a bunch of links to everything but a wheel merchant.

I don’t want to discourage or frighten you from considering an online purchase. On the contrary…I do encourage you to do so. It can be a real rewarding experience. I know for me it was when I bought my new set of rims. I chose a very reputable merchant who has been in business for a long time. The price was very competitive and they delivered right to my installer.

Custom wheels are expensive and as such they are often the target of thieves. Most custom wheels come with specially designed lug nuts which make it virtually impossible for them to be stoleln. The lug nut is actually a lock with a key that you keep in a secure place.

The bottom line…custom wheels are a fun way to make your vehicle unique and to make it stand out. Adding a set of custom wheels can also make your vehicle more desireable and worth more when you go to sell it.
